Ten Tips to Make Walking the Highlight of Your Day

Your weight loss walking program may already be an established part of your schedule each day.

And some days you probably enjoy it more than others.

But wouldn’t it be great if you could get the most out of every single walk?

Here are 10 tips to help you see how to make walking fun:

  1. Schedule your walk times appropriately. Figure out when you tend to have the most energy during the day; this would be a great time to walk. You’ll walk faster, with better form and be more likely to get yourself out the door instead of finding reasons why it’s not a good time.
  2. Don’t be afraid to switch your walk time depending on the weather. Walking in the rain is not most people’s idea of fun. So if you normally walk in the afternoons, but the forecast is for bad weather, consider walking in the morning on that day.
  3. Catch up on your “reading.”Assuming you walk in a place where you can safely wear earphones, load an audio book on your portable music player. As long as you stay aware of your surroundings (and are careful not to play your audio book too loudly and damage your hearing), your walk time can become a time to exercise your brain too.
  4. Do quick errands to save yourself time. Depending on where you live, you might be able to combine some of your walks with simple errand. A quick walk to the grocery store can get your walk in, save gas, and let you pick up something you needed to get from the store anyway.
  5. Find a walking partner. When you walk with a friend, you’ll always have someone to keep you company and to talk with. A regular walking partner can also help to motivate you on days when you’re tempted to skip a walk.
  6. Exercise your dog. Speaking of finding a walking partner, you might already have one in your home. Once you start taking your dog on your daily walks, you’ll have a devoted walking partner.
  7. Involve the family. You might not be able to get your entire family out the door every time you go on a walk, but try to schedule one or two family walks during the week. They can be after dinner one night a week and once during a weekend day, for example.
  8. Set goals and reward yourself. Maybe you want to walk a certain number of miles in a given month, or perhaps you want to get in shape enough to enter a 5k or 10k charity walk. If you succeed, buy yourself a small reward.
  9. Explore new areas. On days when you have a little extra time, explore a new park or walking path in your area, or even just a different part of your neighborhood. This can be a great way to keep your walking workouts fresh.
  10. Open your eyes and ears! Even if you prefer to walk the same route every day, there are likely to be somewhat different things to see and hear each time you walk. Listen to the birds, or even just the sound of the wind, and you might find yourself surprised at how you connect with the outdoors.

But perhaps the best way to make walking the highlight of your day is simply to enjoy it for what it is.  Don’t view your walks as a chore or an obligation, and they won’t be!

I find that walking is the perfect time to pray and thank God for His wonderful creation. That really energizes me and gives me some quiet time for reflection. I do take my dog on a walk, but once I get my heart rate going, I hate that he wants to stop and sniff!
