New Food Plate vs Old Food Pyramid

USDA My Plate

In addition to the new logo (above) the USDA also gives these really good recommendations.

Balancing Calories
●     Enjoy your food, but eat less.
●     Avoid oversized portions.

Foods to Increase
●     Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
●     Make at least half your grains whole grains.
●     Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.

Foods to Reduce
●     Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals ― and choose the foods with lower numbers.
●     Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

My thoughts…..These recommendations may seem obvious – but when you look at the high obesity rates and the diabetes epidemic in our country – I guess we need to be reminded again and again of these basic health principles.

I think the old food pyramid (pictured below) was much harder to understand and confusing to some.

I really like the new food plate. It is really simple to understand and easier to visualize the proportions of foods on an actual plate.

I hope it helps people THINK before they fill their plates. If we all make our plates more healthy – we will be more healthy! :)
