How to Stay Motivated to Lose Weight

I appreciate you sharing your journey with me.

You send in emails that share

  • “the highs” (when you reach goals you shoot for, when you are having a good day)
  • “the lows” (when you have weight loss challenges, frustrations and setbacks)

Here are some of the challenges you emailed to me recently….

  • “I was on the right track and lost 18kgs (40 pounds) was looking and feeling great – than I got pregnant and gained about 12kgs (27 pounds) back now I’m trying so hard to lose that…but this time its so slow that I’m feeling disappointed, discouraged and frustrated!”
  • “I’m so frustrated. my weight is 72 kg (159 pounds) and height is 152 cm (about 5 ft tall). I need to lose about 40-50 pounds. I have good motivation but still confused.Would you please help me…”
  • “I am 80 lbs overweight and I am desperate to see the scale move in the right direction—please help!!!  I am doing my smoothies, I am going to the gym but I still think I’m missing something and I don’t know what it is… Thanks again for your thoughts and your delicious recipes.”

You all know I have had my share of those same UPS and DOWNS you go through and I have a few ideas for getting through them victoriously.

My best advice encompasses 4 words.

You will want to do these 4 words for the rest of your life.

Simply….

Eat Better…Move More

If you just improve what you eat and move more and more every day….you will get healthier and healthier

Here a couple habits that have helped me Eat Better, Move More and lose the 70 pounds and keep it off! Maybe they will help you too.

First – CONGRATULATE YOURSELF!!

Every time you do something healthy – be PROUD of yourself!

It IS a BIG DEAL!  So many folks just give up and let their health go -but NOT YOU! You are doing the challenging work to take care of YOU and that is so awesome!

You are eating better! You are moving more!

All the healthy steps you take really do add up to a healthy life. But you gotta do those healthy steps regularly to get the healthy life payoff.

Second – Journal your Exercise

I keep a daily journal – that logs EVERY THING I do that counts toward exercise. I write down:

  • when I do an exercise DVD.
  • when I play basketball or shoot hoops even if it is only for 10-15 minutes.
  • when I play frisbee with my husband in the backyard.
  • when I play an xbox 360 Kinect Fitness game or exercise class
  • I jot down the miles I walk every day. (I wear a pedometer religiously! I freak out if I leave home without it! Silly, I know! – this one is my current favorite pedometer )

It only take a couple minutes to jot down your exercise activities and the payoff is BIG!

I have done an exercise journal for years and it encourages me as I look back over the months and years and see how ACTIVE I have been – it helps me see myself as a “FITNESS” person now!

And the more you move your body – the better you feel.You get a psychological uplift when you exercise.

Third – Journal your Food

Write down what you eat – no need to write a book – keep it simple but be honest.

You may find that you are right on track with eating more healthy. Or you may find some “hidden” high calorie or high fat items that might be sabotaging all your other efforts.

Seeing that you are eating healthy will encourage you to keep eating healthy. And when you have a slip up you will be able to see it and make a change right away.

Be PROUD of yourself when you eat right. And keeping track of your food intake will help you see how much you are eating better foods. Remember food is FUEL and your body needs good fuel so you can keep moving and stay active! :)

Fourth – Stress and Weight Loss don’t mix well

Women tend to take care of everybody else and leave themselves last. We get worn out, don’t we??

No wonder we feel like we “deserve” that piece of cake or that big bowl of ice cream or that huge helping of ____________ (fill in the blank with your favorite food).

Try to give yourself some real relaxing time at least once a week and reduce your stress.

Do something YOU really like to do and make sure you take the time do it!

  • maybe a pedicure or manicure
  • go to a movie
  • take a walk in a park
  • hang out with some friends and have some fun
  • take a break outside and just breathe in fresh air
  • make a list of all that you are thankful for and see ALL that is going “right” in your life

I sincerely hope one or more of the ideas I shared above can help YOU stay on your healthy path to losing weight and keeping it off for good.

Remember to enjoy the journey…and be so proud of yourself that you are moving TOWARD health….don’t ever give up.

It is SO WORTH it to keep moving (with your exercise and with your overall health plan).

Remember the simple 4 words…. Eat Better Move More and you will be on your way!
