Can You Lose Weight Without Exercise?

“Can you lose weight without exercise?”

YES you can.

Do I recommend it?


But wait a second…..I’m jumping ahead.

First…. a short re-cap for those that are new to my story.

When I was super overweight (70 pounds heavier) I hoped  beyond all hope (Believe me!) that I could find out how to lose weight without exercise!

When I was fat, the last thing I could see myself doing was EXERCISE!

So back to your question…

Can you lose weight without exercise? Yes…..but…..

Before you can answer THAT question YOU need to know the answer to a few other questions.

A)  How Many Calories Do You Eat Each Day.

This is important information. In order to lose weight you must burn more calories than you eat.

Track how many calories you eat each day. Consider using a tracking application or website.

B)  How Much Weight Do You Want to Lose and How Quickly Do You Want to Lose it?

A pound is 3500 calories. Therefore if you want to lose a pound a week you’d want to cut back your daily intake by 500 calories. (500 calories multiplied by 7 days is 3500 calories.)

If you wanted to lose 2 pounds a week then you’d burn 1000 more calories than you ate.

Now for the BIG QUESTION…..

C)  Would You Rather Cut Back on What You Eat or Exercise More?

Because it’s a simple calorie in calories out equation you have choices.

  1. You can eat fewer calories each day.
  2. Or you can continue to eat the same amount but exercise more each day.
  3. You can also choose a combination approach – eat a little less and exercise a little bit more.

So to answer the question about “How much exercise do I need to lose weight?”, the answer is largely up to you. Know the data. Choose your goal. And decide your approach.

What do I do? I do a combination of #2 and #3 above.

Like I always say…. please do NOT diet – just eat better quality food and move your body more

You know I LOVE FOOD so cutting back on food forever just to be slim and healthy would never be fun for me. And counting calories….long term….yuck! :(

There are SO many health benefits to exercise. And even if you don’t think so right now, exercise really does become a very enjoyable activity.

So now you know the answer to your question -  Can you lose weight without exercise? While ultimately you don’t need to exercise to lose weight, know that exercise is good for your overall health. It’ll help you live longer and better as it provides so MANY other health benefits.

Now…trade in your couch “treadmill” and lace up those shoes and go for a walk! :)

You are so right, Jana! I can lose weight without exercise but my legs look like Betty White’s jowls and my cholesterol is still as high as Zack Galafinakis. Actually, I’ve lost 12 pounds in the last 6 months by adding just an extra 15 minutes a day to my exercise routine and eating much smaller portions – like a 1/2 cup of yogurt instead of the whole thing, or two bites of mashed potatoes instead of the whole pot. And dieting is NOT for losers – meaning, don’t diet if you want to lose weight! The pounds of blubber will simply return with friends once you stop dieting. Diet authors should have their brains liposuctioned.
