Best Walking Program for Weight Loss? This is It!

What is the BEST Walking Program?

It’s no secret that I am a devoted walker.

It helped me lose weight and feel fantastic.

I often get asked about how to start a walking program or what type of walking program is the best.

My answer is always…

“Any walking program that YOU WILL STICK TO is the one that is right for you.”

Kidding, sort of.

It’s really important that you find a walking program you can stick with.

If you don’t stick with it, it’s not going to give you the results you deserve.

I recommend one of three approaches and to be honest, you may need to try all three to find the one that works for you.

Bits and Pieces

The bits and pieces approach is ideal for busy people who only have short segments of time.

It’s also great if you’re just getting started and cannot walk for more than a few minutes at a time.

Here’s an example of how it works:

  • You walk for ten minutes in the morning before breakfast, but maybe after your morning coffee!
  • Walk for fifteen to twenty minutes at lunchtime.
  • Walk for another ten to fifteen minutes in the late afternoon and fifteen minutes in the evening.

Of course, you can break up the walking time any way that works for you; this is just an example. The goal is to get to the point where you’re walking for an hour a day.

One Lump Sum

The other way that many people approach walking is to do it all at once.

For example, you might get up in the morning and go for an hour walk. This helps you get it out of the way.

However, if you’re “off the couch” and haven’t exercised or walked in a while, walking for an hour right away may be too much. Start with whatever time feels good and gradually increase your walking time.

Competitive Walking

There are those individuals who are competitive by nature and are motivated by training for a competition and actually competing.

There are many ways to be a competitive walker. You can train to walk for a 5K, 10K or a half marathon. You can even train to walk a marathon. You can also enter race walking competitions.

Make It Fun

However you decide to add walking to your day, make sure it’s an enjoyable experience.

Walk your dog. Listen to music or walk with friends. Use it as the contemplative and meditative part of your day and enjoy the results.
